2. Joe “POP” Dolce

Typography
2025

This typeface was created by turning my grandfather’s handwriting into a digital font while keeping the personality and warmth of his original script. I studied his letter shapes, spacing, and natural flow, then refined them so the typeface would feel consistent and easy to read. The project combines personal meaning with graphic design, transforming a handwritten style into a usable and expressive typeface.

My grandfather–whom we call “Pop”–was a talented graphic artist. He studied at the School of Industrial Art in New York City and earned several awards throughout his career, showcasing his work in numerous exhibitions. Although I never had the chance to meet him, I feel connected to him through the incredible body of work he left behind.

I wish my Pop was still here to he could mentor me along my graphic art journey. I chose to commemorate him through the creation of this typeface. The typeface was created after carefully examining his unique handwriting which you can see in the examples attached.
